What is battery storage?

A home battery stores electricity in a rechargeable unit, usually fitted inside a garage, utility room or loft, or sometimes outside. The stored electricity can then be used later, for example in the evening when your solar panels are no longer generating.

Batteries are most often paired with solar PV. Solar panels generate electricity during the day, and the battery holds any electricity you do not use straight away so you can use more of it yourself, rather than exporting it all to the grid. Some batteries can also be charged from the grid when electricity is cheaper, depending on your tariff.

A battery does not make a home independent of the grid. Most homes with a battery remain connected to the grid and will still draw electricity from it when the battery is empty or demand is high.
